Things to do in Naxos, from easy local moments to full island adventures
A practical guide to experiences we genuinely recommend: walks from our doorstep, mountain routes, village life, water sports, sailing, outdoor activities, olive oil experiences and ways to discover the food and landscape of Naxos.
Do not experience Naxos only from a beach
For your first afternoon or evening, we recommend exploring Chora on foot because Pasas Castle places you close to the Old Town, Kastro, the harbour and Portara, so the island can begin without a car, a timetable or a long transfer. Take your time in the narrow lanes and finish beside the Temple of Apollo as the light changes over the Aegean.
For the experience that best reveals the scale of Naxos, choose one day in the interior. Hike Mount Zas if you want a genuine outdoor challenge, or explore the inland villages and combine the route with the Salteris Olive Mill for a tour and olive oil tasting if you prefer a slower combination of landscape, agriculture, local food and village life.
Choose the Naxos experience that fits your day
Times are approximate. Boat trips, water sports, riding and guided experiences depend on season, weather and availability, so confirm the final details with the operator before departure.
Chora, Kastro & Portara on foot
One of the best ways to begin your stay is simply to leave the car behind and discover Naxos Town on foot. Walk through the old market lanes, climb into the Kastro quarter and continue toward the harbour and the islet of Palatia, where Portara stands above the sea.
The route works especially well in the late afternoon because the light becomes softer and Portara is one of the island’s classic sunset viewpoints. Allow time to wander rather than following only the fastest route.
Walk toward the centre and Old Market, continue uphill through Kastro, then descend toward the harbour and follow the paved causeway to Portara. Around sunset the final section can become busy, so arrive a little earlier.
Hike Mount Zas
Mount Zas rises above the central villages and reaches just over 1,000 metres, making it the highest summit in the Cyclades. The reward is a broad panorama over Naxos and the surrounding islands, while the mountain is also closely connected with the local mythology of Zeus.
There are different approaches. The Agia Marina route is the more direct summit option, while the route through Aria Spring and Zas Cave is more demanding and should not be treated as a casual summer walk.
Drive toward Filoti and then follow the road toward Danakos for the Agia Marina trailhead. Start early, especially in summer, carry enough water and wear closed shoes with good grip. Do not begin the exposed ascent in extreme heat or poor visibility.
Explore the mountain villages
Naxos is much more than its western beaches, and a drive through the interior is one of the most rewarding ways to understand the island. Chalki offers neoclassical details and the fertile Tragea valley, Filoti sits beneath Mount Zas, and Apeiranthos has marble-paved lanes and a distinctive mountain character.
Do not rush from village to village only to collect photographs. Stop for coffee, walk the lanes, visit a small museum or church if open and leave enough time for a meal in the mountains.
Drive from Chora toward Chalki, continue to Filoti and then Apeiranthos. You can return the same way or descend toward Moutsouna if you want to extend the day to the east coast.
Salteris Olive Press — Tour & Olive Oil Tasting
A visit to the Salteris olive mill offers a direct introduction to one of the most important agricultural traditions of inland Naxos. During the tour, visitors can discover how olives become olive oil and gain a closer view of the production process rather than experiencing the product only at the table.
The visit also includes an olive oil tasting, which makes the experience especially worthwhile for guests interested in local food, agriculture and the everyday traditions of the island. It is an easy activity to combine with a wider excursion through Sagri and the central villages of Naxos.
Contact the olive mill before visiting to confirm the available tour and tasting time. The stop can be combined naturally with Sagri, the Temple of Demeter and a wider drive through the agricultural interior of Naxos.
Sailing & Rina Cave
A sailing or small-boat excursion reveals a very different side of Naxos because much of the southern coastline is best appreciated from the water. Depending on the route and weather, excursions may include quiet coves, swimming stops and the dramatic sea cave of Rina.
Rina Cave is accessible from the sea and is a regular summer excursion destination. Exact itineraries change with wind, sea conditions and the boat used, so treat the advertised route as provisional until the operator confirms it on the day.
For departures from Chora, walk or drive to Naxos Port according to the meeting instructions supplied by the operator. Confirm the exact meeting point, departure time and return time the previous evening.
Windsurfing & SUP at Agios Georgios
Agios Georgios is not only the easiest beach to reach from Pasas Castle; its southern section toward Laguna is also closely associated with windsurfing and other water activities. The shallow setting can make the area approachable for first experiences when conditions are suitable.
On calmer mornings, stand-up paddleboarding and relaxed sea activities are a good alternative, while stronger afternoon winds can completely change the character of the water.
Walk to Agios Georgios and continue south along the beachfront toward the water-sports area. Ask locally about the day’s wind before renting equipment or arranging a lesson.
Kitesurfing at Mikri Vigla
Mikri Vigla is one of the island’s best-known locations for kitesurfing, with the northern side of the headland exposed to the summer Meltemi and a long sandy shoreline that has developed a strong wind-sports culture.
Beginners should use a recognised school and follow the instructor’s assessment of the day’s conditions, while experienced riders should still respect designated launch zones and other beach users.
Drive south past the Plaka area and follow signs for Mikri Vigla. Make sure your navigation takes you to the kitesurfing side of the headland rather than the calmer southern bay.
Scuba diving & snorkelling
The varied coastline around Naxos supports both introductory diving and more advanced underwater excursions. Diving centres around organised beach areas can provide equipment, training and guided dives, while experienced divers may have access to wreck, cave and reef sites according to certification and sea conditions.
If you do not want a full scuba session, snorkelling is a simpler way to add an underwater element to a beach day, especially in clear, calm conditions.
Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna are convenient starting areas for diving services. Confirm the exact centre and meeting point before departure because the boat launch may differ from the shop location.
Horse riding
Guided horse riding is one of the more memorable ways to experience the open landscape around Naxos, with routes that can include sandy coast, rural tracks and sunset rides. Options exist for different experience levels, although the route and horse should always be matched to the rider.
Because times can depend on heat, daylight and group level, reserve in advance and follow the operator’s instructions about clothing, footwear and meeting time.
The exact meeting point depends on the riding operator and selected route. Use the confirmed location from your booking rather than travelling to a generic beach meeting point.
Cycling around Naxos
Naxos offers unusually varied terrain for a Cycladic island, from flat coastal sections to rural roads, valleys and demanding mountain climbs. A bicycle or e-bike can turn familiar routes into an activity in their own right rather than simply a way to move from one place to another.
For a relatively accessible ride, the southern coast offers beach-to-beach options, while routes through the interior require more fitness and careful planning because gradients, heat and traffic can become significant.
For an easy start, ride south from Chora toward Agios Georgios, Laguna and Agios Prokopios. Longer riders can continue to Agia Anna and Plaka, but allow enough energy and daylight for the return.
Cooking & local food experience
A cooking class or organised food experience gives context to products that appear throughout Naxian menus, including local cheeses, potatoes, meat, herbs, citrus liqueur and seasonal vegetables. The most interesting sessions connect the meal with the agricultural landscape and village life rather than presenting only a recipe demonstration.
Many experiences take place outside Chora, so check whether transport is included. A village-based class can combine naturally with a wider day in the interior.
Confirm the exact village or farm location before departure. If your class is in the interior, combine it with Chalki, Filoti or another nearby village rather than making two separate long drives.
Chalki, Filoti, Apeiranthos and the east coast
If you have a car and want one day that feels distinctly Naxian, this is the route we recommend. It moves from the fertile interior to the high mountain villages and then descends toward the old emery port of Moutsouna, so the journey itself becomes the activity.
Open the complete routeBegin with a slow walk, coffee and the atmosphere of the Tragea valley.
Stop beneath Mount Zas and explore the village lanes around the main square.
Walk the marble streets and allow time for a mountain lunch or museum visit.
Descend to the historic emery port and the eastern Aegean coast.
A few practical rules make the day better
Respect the heat
Mountain hiking and long cycling routes should begin early in summer. Carry water, use sun protection and avoid exposed routes during the hottest hours.
Let the weather decide
Wind is an advantage for kitesurfing and windsurfing but can alter sailing, kayaking and swimming plans. Confirm sea conditions before committing to a route.
Confirm the meeting point
For boat trips, diving, riding and cooking experiences, use the exact location sent by the operator because the meeting point may differ from the public-facing address.
